The City of Mineola proudly recognized a hometown legend during Monday nightβs City Council meeting by declaring February 23, 2026, as βCoach L.C. Gregory Day.β
Leonard Charles βL.C.β Gregory, who passed away in 1986, dedicated more than two decades to shaping young athletes and leaders through his work with the football and athletic programs at Southward/McFarland High School. From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, Coach Gregory built a tradition of excellence, guiding his teams to 11 district championships and celebrating three undefeated regular seasons.
Beyond the wins and titles, Coach Gregoryβs influence reached far deeper β impacting generations of students both on and off the field. His commitment to discipline, teamwork, and character left a lasting mark on the Mineola community.
Family members, including his grandchildren, joined former players and community supporters at the meeting to proudly accept the proclamation in his honor, celebrating a legacy that continues to inspire.
