The City of Mineola proudly recognized a hometown legend during Monday night’s City Council meeting by declaring February 23, 2026, as β€œCoach L.C. Gregory Day.”

Leonard Charles β€œL.C.” Gregory, who passed away in 1986, dedicated more than two decades to shaping young athletes and leaders through his work with the football and athletic programs at Southward/McFarland High School. From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, Coach Gregory built a tradition of excellence, guiding his teams to 11 district championships and celebrating three undefeated regular seasons.

Beyond the wins and titles, Coach Gregory’s influence reached far deeper β€” impacting generations of students both on and off the field. His commitment to discipline, teamwork, and character left a lasting mark on the Mineola community.

Family members, including his grandchildren, joined former players and community supporters at the meeting to proudly accept the proclamation in his honor, celebrating a legacy that continues to inspire.
