The carnation is the birth flower for January: Carnations are a popular choice for January because they are able to bloom in the winter months. They are also steeped in symbolism, with their formal name, dianthus, coming from the Greek word for "heavenly flower". Carnations can symbolize love, whether it's romantic, familial, or the love of a friend.
January also has another birth flower, the snowdrop, which symbolizes rebirth and overcoming obstacles. Snowdrops are small, white flowers that bloom in the winter months and can cover large areas of the ground.
In the modern era, many months have multiple birth flowers, allowing people to choose the one they feel a stronger connection with.

Happy New Year! City offices are closed today. Normal hours resume tomorrow, January 2nd.
