Skillet Licorice set to perform this evening at the Select Theatre! They will kick off at 7 p.m. We hope to see you there! The members of Skillet Licorice are in town from San Francisco, but they are a band whose heart lies in Mineola. That’s right! Skillet Licorice, as it turns out, are devotees of the East Texas Serenaders. The East Texas Serenaders were a powerhouse string band from the 1920s and 1930s whose sophisticated take on hillbilly music launched the Western Swing movement. Hailing from farms around Mineola and Lindale, the East Texas Serenaders are generally credited with paving the way for the likes of Milton Brown and Bob Wills.

Big Boy No. 4014 now on tour that includes passage through Mineola The public will have the chance to watch the Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive pass through Mineola on Tuesday, September 17. Big Boy began its “Heartland of America Tour” yesterday in Cheyenne, Wyoming and will pass through nine states in its eight-week tour. According to the Union Pacific website, the 83-year-old locomotive is scheduled to pass through Mineola as part of the “Heartland of America Tour.” A whistle stop is planned in Big Sandy at 1 p.m. on Sept. 17 and at 1:45 p.m. it is set to leave Big Sandy. UP notes that the schedule is subject to change. Mineola Amtrak Depot Hostess Martha Moreland said from the crossing west of Big Sandy, depending on the speed of the train, it should take about 22 minutes to get to Mineola. According to the Union Pacific website, 25 Big Boys were built exclusively for the company and No. 4014 was delivered to them in 1941. It was used for 20 years, traveling over 1 million miles, before being retired in December 1961. In 2013 a multi-year restoration began. UP returned the train to service in May 2019 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. On its way to Texas the train will pass through Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas. According to UP, the locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were “hinged” to allow them to negotiate curves. The massive engines normally operated between Ogden, Utah and Cheyenne. The tour is set for arrival in Houston on Sunday, Oct. 6. On the return trip, a stop in Fort Worth is scheduled on Oct. 10-11 and the locomotive will return to Cheyenne through Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado. #BigBoy4014 #SteamLocomotive #TrainTour #MineolaEvents
