JOB SUMMARY: Animal Control Officer
JOB CLASS: Non-exempt, Full-Time
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITY: Chief of Police
Job Summary:
Under supervision; responsible for carrying out tasks required to enforce animal and rabies control and licensing permit regulations; maintains records, and does related work as required.
Essential Job Functions:
Patrols area to pick up stray animals and unlicensed dogs; enforces City Ordinances governing animals and rabies control; investigates complaints regarding animal nuisances; answers questions regarding the licensing and disposal of animals; reads, writes and converses well; displays good decision making abilities; makes mathematical calculations and performs work efficiently and accurately with little supervision; assists with rabies control work; maintains the animal control facility; collects fines and fees, prepares daily cash report; prepares monthly reports for the Chief of Police; requisitions office supplies and equipment; must be bondable; interfaces courteously and effectively with the public and other City employees in person, on the telephone, on the radio or in writing; provides for the care and feeding and eventual disposal of animals in his/her care; relays information to the public; reads and interprets regulations governing animal control; calculates costs involved in controlling animals; dispatches when needed; prepares records for storage; climbs ladder to research, lift and retrieve records in boxes weighing up to 30 pounds; bends, lifts and carries up to 100 pounds; push, pull or drag up to 150 pounds; attends required training sessions; sits, stands and/or converses for extended periods of time; uses PC and all other modern office equipment; types and mails correspondence; works well under pressure; follows directives; assists other employees as needed; handles difficult customers; meets deadlines; sits, stands and files for extended periods of time.

Works with appropriate State agencies.
Required Education, Degrees, Certificates, and/or License:
High School Diploma or GED; Texas Class C Drivers License.
Experience, Training, Knowledge, and Skills:
Previous experience involving animal control, knowledge of care and handling of animals; knowledge of State laws and City Ordinances concerning animal control; knowledge of investigation and inspection procedures; experience recording and handling money; ability to patrol and detect diseased or unlicensed animals.
