JOB SUMMARY:

Under direction; responsible for all investigations, covert or overt, being conducted by this or other agencies; responsible for crime scenes, recovery of evidence and proper handling and storage of evidence; responsible for the coordination of investigations between the City of Mineola and other agencies; responsible for the review and processing of all reports for prosecution by the District Attorney; must be available for emergencies and maintain communication with dispatchers as to how investigator may be contacted when off duty; responsible for the acquisition of supplies and materials to properly conduct investigations; keeps such records as necessary.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Conducts field investigations and inspections; submits oral and written reports; enforces State traffic and criminal laws; enforces City Ordinances; supervises training programs; receives and evaluates complaints; receives and books prisoners; collects and preserves evidence; interrogates witnesses and prisoners; answers calls and complaints involving misdemeanors and felonies; secures crime scenes, conducts investigations and makes arrests; offers testimony in court; gives advice concerning criminal laws and City Ordinances; prepares correspondence regarding cases assigned; informs subordinates of charges in laws, court decisions and departmental policy; operates all equipment in a safe and acceptable manner; operates various types of office equipment; works outdoors in light and/or dark in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather; some exposure to dust, odor, electrical, mechanical and toxic hazards, using proper safety precautions; works safely in close proximity to high speed traffic; trains other employees with lesser skills; uses sound reasoning and professional judgment; identifies deficiencies and malfunctions related to the delivery of police service and develops and implements corrective actions; understands and implements administrative instructions and orders; interacts effectively and professionally with other Federal , State and local officials; responds to major incidents and assumes command when and where warranted; makes moral and ethical decisions that conform to law, departmental policy and other applicable regulations; performs duties acceptably after long hours without sleep during emergency situations; works in confining and uncomfortable places for extended periods of time (ei: state outs, command post); demonstrates competent weapons proficiency and the ability to maintain weapons for maximum performance; load and unload police equipment for a vehicle, including lifting objects from a trunk, back seat, etc.; lifts and carries up to 50 pounds, and pulls, pushes or drags up to 100 pounds and sits, stands, stoops or twists for extended periods of time while supervising or participating in departmental operations; must not pose a threat to the health and safety of self or other; obtains materials, tools, supplies and equipment needed to perform work; communicates courteously and effectively with other city employees and the public; communicates effectively in person, on the telephone, or in writing in the English language; subject to twenty-four hour call; works weekends and holidays as required.
