JOB SUMMARY:    Civilian Dispatcher

JOB CLASS:         Non-exempt, Full-Time

SUPERVISOR:       Police Lieutenant

 

Job Summary:

Under supervision; knowledge of area streets, roads, house numbers and fire hydrants; perform work on an assigned shift; receives emergency (911) and non-emergency telephone calls and radio dispatches police, fire and other city provided service personnel and/or equipment to address calls; thorough knowledge of the operation of Tlets computer system and radio equipment; and does related work as required.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical services calls and other emergency calls by dispatching appropriate personnel; study maps to learn the district as necessary; logs information received from radio and other various sources; prepares, types and keeps reports and records, indexes cards for information files and files data; performs other routine duties; operates PC computer and any other modern office equipment; sits, stands and kneels for extended periods of time while operating radio equipment; notarizes documents as needed in police and fire cases; expected to show good judgment within established guidelines; all other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Must be a Notary Public; conduct station tours for school children; word processing and data entry required; ability to lift, carry, push, pull, hold or climb with up to 30 lbs of supplies or equipment; works with appropriate state agencies.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES and/or LICENSES:

High School Diploma or GED; some college preferred; must be certified TLETS operator.

 

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:

Skill in communicating and understanding written and oral instructions; must have ability to take effective action in emergency situations and exhibit emotional stability and courage under stress; knowledge of departmental regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships, and communicate courteously with departmental personnel, other city employees, and the public; ability to negotiate and make effective decisions with minimum supervision; basic computer keyboard skills; ability to operate multi-line telephone system; ability to use tact and diplomacy; knowledge of TLETS, 911 and all other appropriate radio communications operations, including all related laws and regulations.
