FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MORE SURVEYING OF HISTORIC PROPERTIES TO CONTINUE NEXT WEEK

Representatives of the firm hired by the city to survey Mineola’s historic places will be back in town next week. They will be continuing work begun here this summer, researching and photographing buildings (including houses) and other resources. As before, the researchers state that they will not go onto private property to take the photos and there is no need for contact with the owners or occupants.

Researchers from Mead & Hunt architectural and engineering firm plan to resume work here this Wednesday through Friday. They had previously visited in July to conduct research and take photos in Mineola. The firm is updating the City of Mineola’s Historic Resources Survey of buildings and resources that led to the Downtown District being listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of the Interior.

The first historic resource survey of Mineola was completed in 1998 and inventoried pre-1951 buildings. In 2009, Mead & Hunt updated the survey, which inventoried 1951-1970 resources. This time, they will update the two previous surveys, from the public right-of-way surveying historic resources (including houses) built between 1971 and 1980 inside the city.

The city can use the results for nominating resources to the National Register of Historic Places and as a foundation for future preservation activities.
