Job Summary:  LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Job Class:  Non-exempt, Full-Time

Supervision Responsibility:  Director of Streets

 

Under direction; responsible for the safe operation of light construction equipment, requiring above average driving and manipulative ability; involves close contact with other employees of the city and moderate contact with members of the public, and does related work as required.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Operates equipment such as tractors with various attachments (augers, mowers, chippers, stump grinders, etc.); operates welding and torch equipment; operates trucks, other vehicles, equipment and tools; operates all such equipment in a safe and acceptable manner; lifts and carries up to 50 pounds; operates various push type or hand held power tools such as lawnmowers, edgers, line trimmers, rotary tillers, compactors, jackhammers and chain saws; works outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather; some exposure to dust, odor, electrical, mechanical and toxic hazards, using proper safety precautions; climbs ladders of various heights; works in tight or enclosed areas such as trenches, ditches, drainage access manholes, etc.; works bent over or on knees for extended periods of time; walks through brush or entangled areas along creeks and other areas; works safely in close proximity to high speed traffic; trains other employees with lesser skills; solves various light equipment functions with sound reasoning and good judgement; responsible for the efficient and safe operation, care and appearance of assigned equipment including washing, checks and servicing; communicates courteously and effectively with other city employees and the public; communicates effectively in person, on the telephone, or in writing in the English language; subject to twenty-four hour call; works weekends and holidays as required; performs heavy manual labor.

 

Other Job Functions:

Oversee maintenance of vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment; promotes job safety.

 

Required Education, Degrees, Certificates and/or License:

High School Diploma or GED; some college preferred; Texas Class A Drivers License; completion of street/road maintenance operations course preferred.

 

Experience, Training, Knowledge and Skills:

Two years experience in operating light motorized equipment (loader, backhoe, excavator and maintainer); knowledge of the operation of light mechanical equipment; skillful and safe operation of equipment; read and understand simple drawings, plans, sketches, maps and specifications; understand written and oral instructions; mechanical aptitude to make minor repairs and adjustments in the field.
